Burleigh Heads is so-named for its “burly” dimensions and is a world famous surf spot. It was one of the first coastal settlements between Coolangatta in the south and Southport in the north

Early amusements, such as a ferris wheel on the beach, an ocean pool on the point, and a dance floor high in the hilltop bush, added to its appeal. It has been the scene of many great surfing contests, and is the international headquarters of the popular surf brand, Billabong. Middens (piles of shells) are still visible on the southern side of the headland where the Coast’s original inhabitants enjoyed shellfish feasts.
